Have you ever found yourself attracted to a friend and not known how to slow down flirtatious emotions?

Maybe you have been dating for a while and find yourselves in a “friendship-love” stage where you are constantly flirting but are unsure if it’s leading to something more. If you want to slow down the flirtatious emotions in a best friend relationship, there are some things you can do.

First, try to get into a self-hypnosis mindset. This means convincing yourself that you are not interested in your friend in a romantic way. This can be difficult if you constantly think about them but focusing on the positive change that self-hypnosis can bring is essential.

Secondly, coaching can be another great way to work on slowing down flirtatious emotions. A coach can help you work through any fears or doubts about your attraction to your friend.

Finally, remember that self-confidence is essential. If you are confident, it will be easier to resist the temptation to flirt with your friend. These tips should help you slow down the flirtatious emotions in a best friend relationship and maintain a healthy friendship.

One issue that can come up in best friend relationships is flirtatious feelings. On the one hand, having a close friend to whom you are also attracted can be significant.

However, these feelings can also complicate the friendship and make things awkward. If you find yourself in this situation, you can do a few things to slow down the flirtatious emotions.

First, try to focus on the positive aspects of friendship. Remind yourself why you are friends in the first place and what you enjoy about the relationship.

Second, take some time for self-reflection. Are you sure you want to pursue a romantic relationship with this person? If not, what are your fears and doubts? Lastly, be honest with your friend. Tell them how you’re feeling and ask if they feel the same way. These steps can slow down flirtatious emotions and preserve your best friend relationship.

We’ve all been there- our heart races, we get butterflies in our stomachs, and we can’t think straight when we’re around someone we’re attracted to. But what’s happening in our brains when we experience these emotions?

Attracted to someone we see!

When we see someone we’re attracted to, our brain releases a cocktail of chemicals, including dopamine, oxytocin, and norepinephrine. These chemicals increase our heart rate and blood pressure, affecting the part of our brain that controls our self-control. As a result, we may think and act differently around someone we’re attracted to.

We may be more likely to take risks or do things we wouldn’t normally do. At the same time, our brain is also releasing another chemical called cortisol. Cortisol is the “stress hormone” because it helps us respond to stressful situations. In small doses, cortisol can be beneficial- it can help us focus and be more alert. However, too much cortisol can lead to anxiety and fear.

So, what does all of this mean for our relationships with our best friends?

Well, research has shown that the brain chemistry of attraction is similar to that of fear. In other words, when we’re attracted to someone, we may also experience some of the same emotions we feel when we’re scared. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing- after all, fear can help us bond with others- but it’s something to be aware of. If we’re not careful, our attraction to our best friend could lead us into a situation that makes us feel anxious or uncomfortable.

Therefore, being mindful of how our brains work when we’re around our best friends is essential. If we’re feeling attracted to them, we must take things slow and remember that there is an excellent line between love and fear.

Our minds are primarily responsible for how our body feels. If you feel emotionally, mentally, and physically drained, then perhaps it’s time to take some steps to change your life. Harnessing control over your thoughts and emotions can lead to many health benefits. It takes proactivity and sometimes thinking outside the box to find the right solution for you.

Physical Ailments

Many do not realize how their inner chatterbox, negative cycling thoughts, stress, and anxiety impact their bodies. Headaches, fatigue, or stomach problems can often be blamed on other causes or seen as the problem instead of a symptom. Unchecked stress, anxiety, and negativity can also cause some or all of the following:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Obesity
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Sleep issues

Trying New Ways

While the symptoms of stress, anxiety, and negative thinking are tedious and exhausting, you have the ability and remedy them. One size does not fit all, but there are many options for you to try to take control of your situation. Upwork offers various wellness services to tackle the symptoms and the issue’s root. You can get consultations, coaching, meditation guides, fitness instructors, and nutrition help all in one spot.

Sometimes, change requires thinking out of the box and trying something new. Hypnosis can help reframe your thinking, change automatic responses you naturally have had to exterior situations, and reveal the causes of your mental anguish. A good hypnotherapist will help you discover your goals and obstacles and take a detailed assessment of why you need hypnotherapy. Then, they will teach you how hypnosis works and help you reprogram your mind to be a helpful tool that benefits your daily life.

We sometimes get stuck in a mental routine, and when that routine is negative, it can feel like there’s no escape. Treat your brain to something foreign. Break the pattern by introducing a new skill. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to create new pathways or networks, which ultimately can change behaviors and thoughts. Old paths that are not useful to you or harm you can be replaced by introducing your brain to a new skill.

The more you engage in a new skill and attempt to master the skill, the more your brain will strengthen in that area, form new pathways, and override your brain’s networks that cause negative thinking, stress, or anxiety. Here are some skills to master that can help you reform and reshape your future:

  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Self-hypnosis
  • Journaling
  • Engaging in play, puzzles, or games
  • Joining group activities or clubs

When your mind remains stuck in a negative cycle and your body feels awful, the last thing you want to do is get up and move. Take time to acknowledge the resistance you feel toward exercise, and then audibly coach yourself to take the first steps.

This method to overcome your mind will require initial willpower. But once you get into it, your body will naturally create endorphins. Your mind will feel better. You will likely discover that your physical symptoms have lessened or subsided altogether. Start with easy, low-impact exercises, like a walk or hike. Over time, your body will not only enjoy fitness but will also crave its positive benefits.

The mind is complex and can get stuck into repetitive negative patterns. Those mental patterns can result in severe physical consequences. If you’re tired of your subconscious controlling your days, all it takes is one decision to make a change. Reach out to someone who can guide you through the areas you need assistance with and who can keep you accountable. Take control by trying something different, and actively change your thoughts and feelings by tapping into your brain patterns and body needs and rewiring how you think.

The Power of Choice

Surprisingly enough, for all, there is rarely a day that goes by where we procrastinate making a choice because we experience a scarcity of self-confidence or feelings of self-doubt.

The criteria place, while rising up into maturity, had all people depending on other people, mom and daddy, educators, and family members — for direction and guidance that help develop our self-image and quantities of assurance. Unfortunately, during that time period, we experienced no’s than yes. As a complete outcome, we either rebelled or succumbed to the expectations of the others — appearing to them for approval — embedding in us anticipation amounts of perfectionism and forming our self-image.

As adults, to work in an aggressive universe requires that we’re dependent on hunting towards others for approval. The push to win acceptance through devotion sets in movement adverse procrastination and a stressful presence. Whenever we shed the notion that we must live up to others’ anticipation to be perfect, we then start to build our enter potency of self-confidence. True self-confidence happens by recognizing our skills, strengths, and willingness to precisely change what we decide on. Change is just simply a term that operates the gambit of all digging up emotions out of anger, despair, bitterness, and pain to delight, relief, and pleasure.

However, attracting all under consideration, you and I and everybody else in this world are within the problem-solving business — and to succeed in delivering problem-solving solutions, we truly need a nicely built self-confidence. Consequently, let me say that residing in an economy based on innovation — and economy in which you can win primarily by out believing the competition — self-confidence and choice making is crucial to success.

Let me state that self-confidence has nothing to do with being better than another person. It is feeling solid and good about yourself. It understands your talents and abilities and knowledge as you decide to pursue your goals to make sure that you can alter and improve many aspects of yourself.

Self-confidence depends on you to ultimately access just how attractive, intelligent, capable, and accomplished you are. You can learn to measure yourself only against what feels suitable for you personally and not what is right for anyone else.

Deciding to improve specific areas of your life requires taking an inventory of want to improve. Then set goals for what you choose that offer challenges for yourself that are attainable but not so low.

The Way to Be Successful in Life

Nothing has affected the speed of communication more than the Internet — the influence has captured young and old globally.

How to be successful and increase your ability to ethically influence others naturally will lie in your willingness to rapidly adopt new technology on the internet and your ability to craft your words hypnotically.

Technology is the means to convey your message. But, it’s what you say that really matters – and will make or break a potential influence for good in this world! Your words are most relevant when appealing to ethically natural opportunities with others; use emotional phrases like “curiosity,” “love”, etc., which move people at their core. You’re often on track if appeal through fear (of missing out), money worries, particular interests new times events whatever they may be depending upon how well crafted these messages sound using repetition as necessary to tighten up your communication skills will be the key to increasing how much influence you have over others. This can only happen when there is a willingness on both sides of interaction and someone who knows what they are talking about saying so, it’s important not just for marketing purposes but also in everyday life situations like job interviews or relationships where effective verbal techniques might come into play!

These tips were provided by Kenneth Goods (Author ‘Advertising’), which I find very helpful because he always provides great advice regarding advertising strategies too- something many people forget when writing their resumes/portfolio letters

The key driver in the new economy is the e-business revolution and it will transform every industry sector.

The new economy is all about e-business. This revolution will transform every industry sector and change the way we think, work, and live life experiences forevermore! Salespeople need to hone their influencing skills while leaders are needed more than ever before in order for companies around today’s globe to continue growing efficiently with unleashing human potential at its core; marketers should take note because this means you too…advertisers? You’re not dreaming if these words come out of your mouth correctly — so go ahead: learn ’em now or regret them later.

Salespeople, marketers, advertisers, leaders, and just about everyone responsible for global expansion, operating efficiency, and unleashing of human potential will need to hone their influencing skills. Return into to life experiences — although digging deep into it look for many times you were determined to buy a solution or move to supper and a movie with a friend. How many times have you ever been motivated — like it looked nearly hypnotic — and then later contested yourself as to exactly what prompted one to take action?

In this day and age, influence is the only thing that matters. You can use repetition to make your message penetrate deeper into people’s minds so they will be more likely than ever before to act on what you’re telling them. We live in an era where everyone has access to not just one but many sources for information – which means we need every edge possible when trying to get our point across quickly!

Just as important will be the form and media that we influence others with. The challenge will be in getting us heard and seen above all the noise, clutter, and junk we are bombarded with every second of the day.

Repetition for influencing is the copywriters, marketers, salespeople, and also negotiators’ most energetic weapon. When you use repetition in a straightforward and moral way, you can impact the ability you’ve got along with others. Without a question — the ability to influence people could be the only most effective skill in our own and business world now. The Internet and new technology empower us to influence others in a newer, bigger, and better way, for spectacular growth opportunities, never experienced in history.

Without a question — the ability to influence people could be the one most effective ability in business today. Mastering effect will only handedly account fully for more firm compared to any other skill — will only effortlessly Leap-frog your livelihood and boost your own success. It should really come as no real surprise for you personally if I was to let you know, which the absolute most effective kind of getting and bothering visitors to do it would be with repetition. Yes. You heard me right. Repetition can be a powerful influence that is hypnotic.

Today represents just the tip of the “Information Revolution” and “Technology Revolution” in which we will witness the single greatest change in the global economy and business conditions. Old paradigms will shift at tornado speed. Business and marketing models are changing from brick and mortar traditional business thinking to embracing the e-business revolution — demanding more skilled leadership with the ability to ethically influence others.

Think of what you can do if you will boost your own ability to influence others, of course, without sounding like you are creating a sales pitch and then squeezing them to make a decision. How much success and money could you make with that talent? Painting words and pictures are powerful influencers — “I adore you more each time I notice you” is weak. “Each moment I look to your mind, I’m reminded of the rich love and affection I have for you” paints a much stronger and brilliant photo. “Very persuasive people can orchestrate vivid images that influence both the perception and mood of the listener. Highly skilled salespeople use word magic to bring their prospects and customers to other worlds of sights and sounds and feelings.” Donald Moine & Kenneth Lloyd, Authors of “Unlimited Selling Power”

The Power of Selection

Problem-Solving:  Oddly enough, for many, there is rarely a day that goes by where we procrastinate making decisions because we experience a scarcity of self-doubt.

The criteria set, while rising up into adulthood, had most people depending on others – parents, educators, and relatives – for direction and guidance that set our self-image and degrees of confidence up. During this time period, we experienced. As a result, we rebelled or we succumb to the expectations of other people – looking for approval to them — embedding in us anticipation levels of perfectionism and forming our self-image.

As adults, to act in a world, requires that we be less dependent on appearing to others for acceptance. The drive to win approval, through perfection, sets in also a stressful existence and movement procrastination. We begin to build our inner strength of self-confidence when we shed the notion that we have to live up to the expectation of others being perfect.

Then problem-solving and decision-making, becomes second nature to us, as soon as we overcome the dearth of self-confidence and feelings of self-doubt. True self-confidence comes around to having the willingness to change that which we choose and understanding our abilities. “Change” is a word that runs the gambit of drugging up feelings out of anger, bitterness, bitterness, and pain to happiness, relief, and pleasure.

Bringing everything into consideration, you and I and everyone else in this world are in the problem-solving business – and to succeed in delivering problem-solving solutions. Therefore allow me to say that living in an economy in which you can win large simply by out thinking the contest — self-confidence and decision-making are paramount to success.

Now, allow me to give you an example of someone who embodies such traits of self-confidence and problem-solving.

Frederick W. Smith, Chairman, President, and CEO, FedEx Corp. Using a clearinghouse, along with a method of dissemination, allowed FedEx to deliver, point-to-point, anywhere in the United States — absolutely, positively overnight. Smith explained: “We believed that we had been selling the transportation of goods; in fact, we had promoted peace of mind.” – Fred Smith’s focus and self-confidence have been a force in his invention and problem-solving solutions.

Here are several ways for boosting your self-confidence and problem-solving abilities based on Brian M. Alman and Peter Lambrou, Ph.D.’s

    • First name which area of your life spawns the greatest self-doubt, the least self-confidence. – Your work, folks of the opposite sex, parents, a boss, partner, etc..
    • Second, select that area you want to work on the first. Set and concentrate on one particular circumstance.
    • Third, go to a state of relaxation to do some examination. Imagine an old scenario with somebody whose approval you hunted, but now imagine a new action stemming from the perceptions of behavior.
    • Forth, where you had self-doubt, now see yourself with self-confidence giving yourself positive self-suggestion to strengthen the change that you would like to achieve.
    • Fifth, to change, which comes from within you and should have little influence or expect from you should have a desire for your achievement.

Pain Control Through Hypnosis

Hypnosis does not heal, treat, or cure. Hypnosis enables you to control and eliminate discomfort when it occurs.

Pain is our body’s warning system, telling us something is wrong. You can only remove pain as long as it is not a warning.

You have a fail-safe mechanism in your subconscious that will not let you harm yourself. It is the mechanism that keeps your respiration continuous, blood circulating, heart beating, etc. when you pass out, get knocked out, etc. When you have pain, you should go to your doctor.

People get into more trouble by diagnosing and treating themselves. Always go to your doctor when you do not know the source of pain or discomfort.

I will tell you how I use pain control for myself. It relieves the pain and speeds up the healing process. I will describe three methods that I use to drop pain

  1. Visualization
  2. Glove Anesthesia (with pain control dial)
  3. the Switching Device.

First of all, I do not use the word pain. The pain only means one thing — pain, hurt, and discomfort. I use the word sensitivity.”

You have the ability, through practicing consistently, to relax yourself to a degree where you have altered your rate of breathing, altered your pulse rate, altered your blood pressure, and eliminate tension and anxiety. If you are interested in utilizing pain control, you merely need to practice.

The three methods that follow.

  • I use the procedure I call waking hypnosis to put myself into hypnosis.
  • I describe the location of the sensitivity in terms of shape, size, and color.
  • I then change the qualities by reducing the size, changing the shape, and changing the color.

I give myself the suggestion that the sensitivity is leaving me.

My muscles are loose and relaxed. I give myself a suggestion about what I am going to do so that I re-direct my attention away from the sensitivity.

This is a simple method used to end headaches.

  • Visualize a sensitivity control dial numbered from ten to zero. Ten being the greatest discomfort.
  • Visualize a thick heavy rubber hand being fastened around your left wrist.
  • You can feel your left hand beginning to tingle as the blood to the left hand is being shut off.
  • Feel your left hand becoming tingly and numb, Feel it first turning red then purple from lack of blood.
  • Then visualize it turning white as all circulation stops. Visualize the sensitivity dial as it moves from 10, down to 9 to 8. Feel your hand growing numb.
  • Visualize the muscles clamping down on the arteries and capillaries.
  • Feel the muscles in your wrist squeezing the nerves and preventing the blood flow.
  • Feel your hand becoming more and more insensitive.
  • As the indicator moves to 7, to 6, to 5, feel as if your wrist was injected with Novocaine with no discomfort from the injection.
  • Feel your hand becoming thick, cold, numb, and completely insensitive.
  • Visualize beside you a large bucket of icy water filled with big chunks of ice.
  • As the indicator moves to number~3 visualize you plunging your numb hand into the icy water and feeling for only a moment the piercing cold.
  • Now your hand is complete, total number, absolutely devoid of feeling.

Reach over with your right hand and pinch the back of your left hand. You will feel pressure, but your left hand will be completely numb and devoid of feeling. When you have felt the back of your hand, take your left hand and place it on your jaw.

Feel the numbing sensation transferring and spreading into your jaw. Feel the tingling coldness permeate and penetrate the area.

Your nervous system is very much like an electrical circuit. You can shut off the nerves in any area of your body you choose much the same as you would turn off a light. Visualize the nerve circuit control room.

  • You can see banks of switches, and rows of large power switches, each labeled “left hand.”
  • You can see that the green light is on indicating the nerves are functioning.
  • You can see the wires extend from the switch through your body to your left hand.
  • At the count of three, you will throw the switch, breaking the circuit. The green light will go out and you will feel a slight burst of energy as the circuit is broken and your left hand is completely numb.
  • One, relax and take hold of the switch.
  • Pull the switch and as the light goes out, feel a slight burst of energy and the instant relief of all discomfort, the instant shut-off of all nerves to your left hand.

Be sure to give suggestions that both hands are completely normal at the end of the session.

Hypnosis Anesthesia is powerful.  There are several ways in which the person who is proficient in self-hypnosis will literally anesthetize a region of his/her body.

Painless childbirth and successful surgery without drugs are almost commonplace occurrences. Instruction in how to do it, however, is indeed skimpy.

Pain, like neuron response, normally travels through afferent and efferent paths of the complex nervous system to and from the brain. There is at all times a sensory response to pain, quite obviously revolutionized in man for survival purposes.

The purpose of paralyzing drugs is the blocking of the pathway to the brain; ostensibly hypnotic anesthesia does the same thing. For example, as Novocain numbs the nerve ends in the mouth it also prevents any agitation and transmission of pain to the brain.

To better understand how this works, imagine sensitive feeder lines designed to transmit a message to headquarters. If the lines become short-circuited or cut in two, then we might have an idea of how pain is transmitted (or not) from one’s hand (for example) to the brain. Pain is nature’s way of enabling man to prepare himself for protection, survival or repair.

In our study of the neuron, nerve cells, and properties, we examined the marvelous biologic impulse of the nerve to interchange potassium, chlorides, and sodium. We saw how an impulse is carried from one nerve cell to the synaptic area, thence to the next cell, and eventually to the brain. Imagine now that the nerve cell we examined has become temporarily lifeless and unable to function.

In other words, any message being transmitted would stop right there at the “lifeless” nerve cell and go no further. And so it is that hypnotic anesthesia can stop a message, including pain or feeling of any kind, from one part of the body to its usual reporting place, the brain. (And all this by directed thought or suggestive image.) The brain then becomes insensible (not knowing) of any pain or even the possibility of pain, though a painful act may either be planned or in actual operation.

One method of hypnotic anesthesia is as follows:

First, deeply relax, of course, and imagine yourself wading into a lake in the winter. Cakes of ice are floating on the top, and snow crests the mountains in the background. Your feet immediately become numb.

Then dip one hand into the water – knowing, feeling, and experiencing the hand also becoming numb. Your other hand is out in the sunshine and you can feel the sun’s warmth.

The hand-dipped into the icy water has come out completely numbed, with no feeling whatever. You place the frozen hand on the part of your body that you wish to anesthetize – knowing, feeling, and experiencing that section become numb and without a feeling of any kind.

If it is your left hand, then return it to the ice water if necessary, and retouch the place you wish to anesthetize. All the while your right hand is out in the sunshine, warm, and you can actually feel a tremendous difference. You can stay in the water or come out of it, as you see fit.

This method requires some practice and works well for the more experienced hypnotist or student proficient in self-hypnosis. As in all of life’s endeavors, and especially in hypnosis, self-confidence and a good imagination make this modality effective.

Once the need for the anesthesia is passed, the subject must be returned to the relaxed state and brought out of the “benumbed” feeling by the suggestion that “all feeling returns, you are feeling wonderful.” In the case of a pulled tooth, It is usually a good idea for the subject to remain in a state of waking hypnosis with the affected area remaining numb for some hours after the extraction.

In the case of more serious surgery, a continual and repetitive image of the ice body and beginning technique may be necessary.

“Instant” sleep may also be used in this case for postoperative therapy by directing the sleep centers to become effective and experience a terribly tired feeling – thereby sending the subject into natural sleep, the greatest therapy we have.

Another popular technique for hypnotic anesthesia is known as the “switch” method which would be as follows:

First, be deeply relaxed, and imagine that within your brain is a long line of switches, with each switch affecting a specific section of your body. If, for example, you have cut your hand or there is a large splinter under the skin that has to be removed, imagine a switch leading to the affected hand with a COLORED LIGHT above the switch.

See yourself pulling the switch, THE LIGHT GOING OFF, and consequently, (realizing that this switch controlled the current lending to your hand), feeling nothing whatever.

Your suggestion would be:

My hand is becoming numb, numb, number, number, number, number… NUMB.

I am going to pinch my hand and feel  NOTHING.

As I pinch the hand it becomes even numb and absolutely without the feeling of any kind.

THERE IS NO FEELING. Completely numb.

Continued practice with the switch method has allowed some practitioners to become so proficient that they may simply stroke the face (for instance) three times and have it become instantly numb. The student should work toward such perfection of technique.

Still, another method is to imagine that the part of the body to be anesthetized has been eliminated from the body. If it is a tooth, for example, imagine that the lower jaw (for instance) has been entirely removed. Another method is to imagine yourself apart from your body and look DOWN on your body until the pain is alleviated.

Whichever method you choose for certain circumstances,  “The subconscious can close the nerve currents just as an anesthetic drug paralyzes the nerves.” Your repertoire of professional “tools” is never complete without your knowledge and practice of hypnotic anesthesia.

Create Your Own Future

What stands in the way of people creating their own future and finding their mission and intention in life generally results from a prior agenda!

Recently I have identified issues, obstacles, and solutions to dealing with habits of behavior for easing the challenge of change.  Through my mentoring, seminars, and private hypnotherapy sessions, I have found that people don’t change and won’t change until they can effectively control conflicting prior agendas.

For example, Jane (fictitious name) wants desperately to create residual income.  She signs up for a referral network marketing company that will give her the income she so desperately says she wants and needs. She’s excited about the possibilities.

She was told that in order for her to generate income that she will need to buy and use the products herself.  She says I will jump on it right away and order the product.  Jane is successful at recruiting several people into her new and exciting business.

However, several months have passed and Jane still hasn’t ordered her product.  Why?  Jane’s excited, but she is harboring conflicting prior agendas.  After confronting Jane, she said I will order the product tonight.  After probing a little deeper, Jane explained that she has an uncomfortable and unpleasant feeling inside based on other agendas in her life. She, therefore, has procrastinated in taking any action.  Jane’s classical procrastination ploy is to wait to feel emotionally ready before she acts on a project.  Unfortunately, Jane lost money this week and opportunity — a repeated pattern in Jane’s life.

Jane’s is not an isolated story.  We can all look at ourselves and identify with Jane.  If we are to create our future and reap the benefits of an expansive and growing global marketplace, we need to overcome prior agendas that sabotage our future and break the procrastination habit.

Dr. Bill Knaus, former Director of Training at the Institute for Rational Emotive Therapy, says — “Procrastination is a choice.  We are myth-making creatures with great capabilities of inventing fiction to explain reality.  Fictions weaken our action decisions and strengthen avoidance decisions.”

Greater and more life-enriching opportunities will come to those who overcome the procrastination habit and take action to beat this drain on time and life. Technology makes it possible to save time and leap forward in your pursuit of building and growing in life and business.

One way of moving forward in creating your future is to build your awareness, not only of your self-limiting behaviors and fears but to embrace the technological tools that will change the cyclone of life. Now is the time to build your mindset and transform your life to begin your journey today by jumping into the technological universe.

Build your presence in the global arena.  Personal marketing and positioning are critical for upward mobility in the corporate world and for the small home-based entrepreneur.

The Internet has given us the quickest easiest and most cost-efficient portal to market one-on-one for growing our business and career.  We can take advantage of this for growing our networks and build relationships.  Take the attitude of “Just do it” – get a clear focus on your intentions, drop your procrastination, and have fun.

The Fundamentals of Self-Hypnosis

When you think of self-hypnosis, what comes to mind? A swinging pocket watch? A vaudeville act? The words ‘You’re getting sleepy…’? Not even close.

“In the field of self-hypnosis and hypnotherapy, there are scores of verbal and nonverbal ways to induce the desired state, but none require props — no lights, no candles, no Hypno-discs, no crystal balls, no pendulums. Hypnosis does rely on relaxation, but sleep is not the goal. And the guy in the black suit and Freudian facial hair? Not needed. Hypnosis is something you can do by yourself, for yourself.

“Hypnosis is nothing more than a state of mind that lets you become responsive to suggestions. When you can induce it in yourself and keep those suggestions positive, the benefits of your life will astound you. You will learn the basics of the technique.”

Your Two-Part Mind

Your mind has two parts: the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Each has a different task:

The conscious mind is objective and analytical and makes up approximately 7–10% of the mind. It has partial control of the nervous system and muscle action. When you deliberately slow your breathing or your heart rate, your conscious mind is in command.

The conscious mind is also the part that organizes our mental processes to lets us cope with reality. It takes incoming messages to the senses and decides whether to accept or reject the information. We use this part of our minds to make day-to-day decisions, and it’s the guardian of the suggestions that enter the subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind makes up the remaining 90–93% of the mind. It controls the autonomic nervous system, regulating heart function, breathing, glandular activity, and other organ and muscle functions. When you’re unconscious for any reason, your subconscious mind is still at work, keeping you alive and well.

The subconscious is a vast storehouse of knowledge, impulse, and experience accumulated since birth. Everything you’ve ever heard, smelled, felt, and experienced is stored in your subconscious.

The subconscious is nonjudgmental. It simply stores and maintains all habits and attitudes, appropriate or inappropriate, good or bad. Self-hypnosis allows you to access this databank and change what’s there.

The 3 Steps to Self-Hypnosis

Successful self-hypnosis relies on three things:

  • Relaxation
  • Imagination
  • Repetition

In self-hypnosis, relaxation doesn’t mean taking a nap. It means becoming deliberately relaxed in mind and body, escaping momentarily from the cares of the day, to create the receptive state necessary for auto-suggestion.

First, set up each practice session this way:

  • Select a comfortable chair in which you are at ease.
  • Remove or loosen any tight clothing — neckties, belts, etc.
  • Turn off radios and televisions, and turn off your cell phone.
  • If you have pets, put them in another room.
  • Place both feet on the floor or a footrest.
  • Uncross your legs and arms.

Look at the clock. Note what time it is, and then imagine that it’s 15 minutes later. For example, if you’ve chosen to practice at 6:00, imagine that the time is 6:15. With repeated practice, you’ll find yourself opening your eyes after your session at the exact time you’ve imagined.

Next, follow these relaxation techniques:

  • Begin every session with three deep breaths, and as you exhale, think silently and inwardly; I am relaxing. Close your eyes and feel yourself relaxing from the top of your head to the tips of your toes.
  • Think to yourself. Any outside noises, sounds, and confusion only cause me to go deeper and deeper into this wonderfully creative state of deep relaxation. Concentrate on your toes. Feel a tingling sensation there and imagine this sensation spreading across the bottom of your feet and up your legs to envelop your entire body completely.
  • Take your time — feel this wonderful feeling of relaxation spreading slowly up your back and around to your abdominal muscles, up to your chest to your neck, scalp, and eyelids, and then to your facial muscles and entire head. You will now recognize that you’re completely bathed in the feeling of relaxation.

As you communicate with yourself, use your own thoughts and words as often as possible, but be sure to include the words “deep,” “relaxed,” and “relaxation.” After you’re relaxed, don’t be concerned with whether or not you’re hypnotizing yourself. Follow through with the relaxation procedures. If you feel a bit drowsy, that’s fine.

Time Out to Try It

No time like the present. No matter what you’re doing, being relaxed will help. Loosen that belt, make yourself comfortable, and take those three deep breaths. See how relaxed you can become using the techniques you’ve just learned.

Welcome back from your mini-vacation. While you’re good and relaxed, let’s move on to the next step. In your daily sessions, to help you develop your imagination, practice producing these sensations:

  • After approximately 5 to 7 minutes of relaxation, take 2 to 3 minutes to feel heavy. Imagine that you’re made of lead or weighed down by G-forces in a climbing jet.
  • Next, take 2 or 3 minutes to feel light. Imagine how it would feel to be an astronaut, floating in weightlessness. Or feel yourself floating right off the chair.
  • Next, take 2 or 3 minutes to feel warm. Imagine yourself in a sauna or steam room, or feel the sun on a sweltering day. Relate to an experience you’ve had. Your memory and imagination will do the rest.
  • Now take 2 or 3 minutes to feel cool. Imagine yourself in the snow or a cold swimming pool. Again, relate to physical sensations you’ve previously experienced.

Finally, imagine how you would like to think, feel, act, and react today, or, if you’re practicing at night, imagine how you wish to be tomorrow.

Time Out to Try It

Stop again, and try to produce one or more of the sensations described above. See how well your mind can guide your body.

To conclude your practice session, always include a post-hypnotic suggestion, such as “Each time I hypnotize myself, I relax more easily and freely. I look forward to practicing every day because I enjoy it.”

Then, to bring yourself back to a normal state of mind, count from one to six, using a phrase with each number. For instance:

  • I am feeling wonderful
  • I feel energized and vital
  • I feel light, elevated, and exceptionally clear-headed
  • I am alert and feeling refreshed
  • I readily accept and respond to my own suggestions. I enjoy practicing daily.
  • I am wide awake — wide awake, feeling wonderful.

Feel free to substitute any other phrases with which you are most comfortable.

In constructing suggestions, always think in terms of the result. Tell yourself what you do want, not what you don’t want. And always think in the first person, present tense — “I am.”

It takes time to see the results of self-hypnosis. With repetition, and only with repetition, the mind internalizes suggestions and reshapes behaviors and attitudes. Advertisers know and rely on this principle — how many commercials do you see just once?

As you use the techniques you’ve learned in this module, you’ll be able to abbreviate or eliminate some of them or even substitute others. Select the techniques that work best for you and make you the most comfortable. It would help if you enjoyed whatever techniques you choose because your own enthusiasm for learning self-hypnosis will determine how regularly you practice, and that will determine how much you benefit from it.
