Most of us have known someone affected by depression at some point. It may have been bad enough to worry you a loved one would attempt suicide. It’s a common problem, but many people.

Regardless of the circumstances and whether or not you’re comfortable intervening, it’s essential to understand and recognize the warning signs and risk factors because suicide can happen at any time. That’s why Don L. Price has assembled the following tips to help. They are reluctant to get involved, to risk making a bad situation even worse. It’s important to understand that suicide doesn’t necessarily have a single cause; often, it’s a combination of factors, such as substance abuse and chronic depression, leading to desperate thoughts and feelings of hopelessness. It usually occurs when stress factors overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope.

Know the Signs

Warning signs are outward indications that someone is in grave danger and is in urgent need of help. People who talk about committing suicide or looking for a means of killing themselves should be taken very seriously and not passed off as someone just trying to get sympathy and attention. It’s a cry for help that can have dire consequences if ignored. Take careful note if someone says he feels hopeless and purposeless, in terrible pain, or tired of being a burden to those they care about.

Sometimes, suicidal intentions manifest themselves through increased use of drugs and alcohol or behavioral changes like increased agitation, rage episodes, or purposeful, reckless acts. Excessive sleeping, self-isolating behavior, wild mood swings, and a desire to take revenge on someone can also indicate suicidal thoughts. It should be considered a warning sign when someone who’s usually upbeat and engaged suddenly exhibits a complete lack of interest in anything, especially things they typically enjoy.

Risk Factors

In and of themselves, risk factors do not cause suicide, but they can help predict it. Usually, risk factors can be broken down into environmental, health, and historical factors. Individuals with a history of mental health problems, depression, or schizophrenia are said to be “at-risk” for suicide. Bipolar and psychotic disorders and severe behavioral disorders are also considered risk factors, as is substance abuse.

Environmental factors may include a history of traumatic life events, such as domestic violence or the death (including suicide) of someone close. Loss of employment, divorce, or a loved one in a terminal condition, can lead to suicidal thoughts and actions. Chronic stress factors like marital problems, sexual/physical harassment, and ready availability of lethal weapons (i.e., firearms), are also contributing factors. Environmental risk factors often vary between socio-cultural groups and traditions. Discrimination, bullying, physical violence, and verbal harassment may contribute to suicide among gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

Oppressed racial minorities, like African Americans and Native Americans, often have elevated depression and substance abuse levels, which help create the conditions for suicide.

Note that there is a definite link between substance abuse and suicide among people of all races and sexual orientations. Addiction’s progressive and chronic nature makes it one of the most lethal factors for suicide, and anyone can be affected.

Treatment

There are many options available for treatment, and obviously, consulting a doctor is the first step. Beyond therapy and medication, many other approaches can help, like talking to friends, planning a scenic getaway, and expressing oneself through art. Suicide is a significant public health problem that often defies attempts to mitigate its deadly effects. It is paramount to understand and identify its warning signs and risk factors, as is the willingness to seek help when the symptoms are clearly in evidence.

Overcoming “More Fiction Than Fact” myths can start you on a journey of great prosperity and success.

Many salespeople and customer service people think they should never experience two deadly fears- Rational and irrational- but there are only two ways to eliminate fear from a rational point of view.

  1. Make sure you never try anything new and keep everything in your tiny little world isolated so that you never grow and always remain the same.
  2. Push through and beyond fear, knowing that not confronting fear is always more painful than the fear itself.

As it turns out, people struggle with bone-rattling pain daily when prospecting and selling, regardless of the product or service. Their fears persist no matter how strongly they feel about their product or service.

Everyone deals with fear. As long as you continue to grow and expose yourself to new opportunities, you will always experience some levels of anxiety. Fear is healthy and normal when put in perspective and managed. It would be unnatural not to share some behavior of fear. Anyone and everyone who finds themselves involved in some form of selling experience has a fear of rejection or reluctance – some to a greater degree than others. Unfortunately, many people in sales who take rejection personally will, over time, develop a defensiveness that negatively impacts their selling career. If unmanaged and you radiate fear, doubt, uncertainty, or defensiveness, your chances of making a  sale diminishes considerably when calling on prospects or clients.   Customers and prospects want to deal with a self-confident person, and when fear comes through you, it creates (often unconsciously) an immediate conflict of trust in your customer’s or client’s mind.

Rational Fear: Fear based on objectively understating the situation is a normal fear.

When you aren’t sure how to deliver an opening of your presentation to your client, you’ll most likely experience fearfulness. Not handling specific objections from your prospects will implant further fears and derail your selling effectiveness, causing you to retreat from moving ahead in the selling process. These fears are rational and originate from one source:  a simple lack of preparation.

The key to overcoming rational fear is to plan, prepare and practice every step of the selling process, including knowing as much about your customer’s objectives and potential objections so that there is no area where you feel uncertain. Your rational fears can easily be overcome through product knowledge and skills training. A solid plan of practice every day will soon eliminate your rational fears.

Irrational Fear:  The most damaging career buster in sales is a cluster of irrational fears.

Fear of rejection. Call reluctance and fear of self-promotion stem from a fear of not being liked. Many people enter into sales because they like people and thrive on being liked by others. But, taken to extremes, a compulsive need to be liked will inhibit your abilities in sales.   Coming across as too friendly and accommodating to win over your customer reduces your firm’s ability to close sales objectively. You may have a customer who likes you, but they are less likely to trust and respect your ability to be their advocate.

The word “NO” is symbolic in sales and life. Fear of rejection (feeling of not being liked) is why most salespeople don’t close the deal, have call reluctance, and chronic procrastination. They fear the “NO” response as a personal rejection of them as a person.

Fear of rejection isn’t always apparent during prospecting and in a sales presentation. Subtle feelings of fear can show up when calling on a  client or prospect with certain authority status, a high-level decision-maker, presenting to a client with your supervisor, or an inpatient prospect. Irrational fears are inner emotions that are behavioral and require a different approach to resolving than rational fears, which are primarily skill-based. How many times have you or someone you know had a presentation memorized and could give it backward and forwards without skipping a beat? Then stood before an audience or corporate president, an ultimately brain dead (figuratively speaking) unable to make the presentation.

We also fear what we don’t understand, and an emotionally healthy approach is to seek to understand the fear of rejection when it occurs. However, don’t blame your feelings when the emotions of fears start to bubble up inside you. Your feelings are the symptoms of your problem. The real culprit is in your behavior or what has been termed mismanaged emotional energy.

Most important is that you consciously recognize the fear when it occurs. Then seek to understand its’ root cause. That awareness alone will often minimize the anxiety and help you determine the most effective way to approach your problem.

Critical to understand is that Irrational fear is not overcome with additional skill-based training. It goes deeper than product knowledge and sales scripting.
